Thesaur is a very easy to use menu driven on-line thesaurus.
When running THESAUR you are first asked for a word to search for.
This can be any word you would like, but THESAUR will not accept numbers,
special characters like !@#$%^&*(), or control characters. The one thing
that you should check on is that THESAUR.DAT is in the correct drive-the
correct drive is shown is the upper left hand corner.
For those with curious minds read on:
About the words 'Loading...' in the upper right hand corner.
What THESAUR is loading is information for a faster search for xross
referencing. This information loads in the background and in no way
interferes with the way THESAUR works. The advantage of this is that
when all the information is loaded it increase the speed of finding
additional words and xross references.
DESCRIPTION OF ALL COMMANDS AND OPTIONS
U or (8) or This displays the word that comes alphabetically before the
up arrow current word. This is shown on the last line of the screen.
N or (2) or This displays the word that comes alphabetically after the
down arrow current word. This is shown on the last line of the screen.
M or (6) or This moves the pointer on the synonyms of an alternate
the Right word to the word on the right of the current pointer
Arrow key ex.

K or (4) or This moves the pointer on the synonyms of an alternate
the Left word to the word on the left of the current pointer
Arrow key ex.
|
SKILL - DEXTERITY PROFICIENCY COMPETENCE
Type in 4 and the result is
|
SKILL - DEXTERITY PROFICIENCY COMPETENCE
<ret> or <ent> Typing return will automatically look up the word that
the pointer is pointing to. In the above example
typing return would clear the screen, start over and
look for the word PROFICIENCY.
PgUp Located on the 9 on the number pad.
Pages up through the thesauus, about 20 words
PgDn Located on the 3 on the number pad
Pages down throught the thesuarus, about 20 words
A This command clears the screen, starts over and asks you for
A new word to look up.
E This command allows you to change the synonyms that THESAUR
comes with.
When you are editing a word there are dashes ---, one for
each letter that you can change. Just enter the new words
and type return when done.
IMPORTANT: If you enter 'E' by mistake and do not want to
Change the words, just enter return with a full
line of dashes and no words, and THESAUR will
make NO changes
this is a full line of dashes:
-------------------------------------
this is not. Entering this line will
cause THESAUR to enter the new line into it's files
HI-----------------------------------
Also there is a format to follow
1) double space between words that are different
HAPPY JOYOUS GLAD
2) single space when it is a phrase
ONE IN A MILLION
S Search all files for word +
This command has several options included on how to search
1) You can display the word if it occurs by itself or if
it occurs inside another word
search for JUST this way would show such words as
JUST JUSTIFY UNJUST UNJUSTIFIABLE
because 'JUST' is found in all of them
2) You can display only the one word only
search for JUST would show such words as
JUST JUST JUST JUST
and only JUST
3) The search has a default word that it thinks is what you
would like to search for, but if it isn't you can enter
the word you like, and then you're asked for the type of
search for the new word
Sample SEARCH for the word JUST and it can occur inside
another word.
ADJUST - FAIR RIGHT IMPARTIAL LEGITIMATE
ADAPT - SUIT CONFORM REGULATE FIT ADJUST
ALIBI - EXCUSE JUSTIFY EXPLANATION
APOLOGY - EXCUSE JUSTIFICATION VINDICATION
BARELY - ONLY JUST NARROWNESS
EQUITABLE - FAIR JUST ETHICAL HONEST UNBIASED
and so on......
A search can be as short as 45 seconds if THESAUR
is installed on a hard drive, or around 2-3 minutes if
on a floppy system. This is the only time that the
speed of a hard drive is easily apparent.
Variables include speed of machine
speed of disk drive
number of lines that contain
the search string.
During a sort you can either pause or quit
F5 F10
After a pause hitting the space bar will resume the search
C Change THESAUR set-up
/ THESAUR configuration is stored in the
IMPORTANT < file THESAUR.DPL this file must be on the
\ default drive whenever THESAUR is run!
There are four questions for the configuration of THESAUR
1) Data drive - originally configured for default drive
2) Color or Monochrome monitor - originally Monochrome
monitor. Entering the number 2 will switch between
these two options.
3) Display Date and Time - Enter the number 3
to switch between YES and NO. Originally configured
for NO
4) Change Display Colors - ONLY when #2 is COLOR
use up and down arrow keys to choose line
on which to change color. use left and right
arrow keys to choose color.
Original colors are:
White for main text
Blue for the main word
Red/orange for the alternate words
Green for xross reference
INSTALL CURRENT COLORS
this gives you the option to save the
new colors to disk or use just this
session.
Changing the Data Drive
When you want to change the data drive you need to have
already copied THESAUR.DAT to the new destination.
When entering the new drive be sure to always end
with a : or a \
Remember to type return after each line.
ex. to change data drive from drive A: to B:
from the A>
1) A>COPY THESAUR.DAT B: <RET>
2) A>THESAUR <RET>
3) Next enter any word for THESAUR to look up (you can't
bypass this, even if you have no word in mind to look
up.)
Now THESAUR displays the word and the main menu
4) Type 'C' to change set up
5) At the Set Up menu Enter 1 to change Data Drive
THESAUR now warns you that THESAUR.DAT must be on
the new drive specification. (we did this in #1)
6) Type 'Y' to Continue, because we understand the warning
and want to continue
7) Enter 'B:' notice how we ended with a :
8) Now we are at the Set up menu again type '0' to
exit. Now the next time you run THESAUR it will
use B: BE SURE TO ALWAYS HAVE THE DATA IN DRIVE B NOW
WHAT? Your back at the system prompt ( A> )
Don't worry it was necessary so that THESAUR could
incorporate the new data drive. Just type THESAUR <ret>
and your up and running again with your new data drive
--> If you want to move all the files to a new drive there
is no need to change the Data Directory as THESAUR is
originally set up to use the default drive
I Information.
This gives my name and address - use it often
Q Quit
This takes you out of THESAUR and back to the system prompt
X Xross reference word
This takes the word at the lower left hand side of the screen
and looks up all the synonyms it has and displays all the
exact matches
ex. Cross reference for the word ANIMAL
ANIMAL - BEAST BRUTE CREATURE LIVING THING
BEAST - BRUTE QUADRUPED BLACKGUARD ANIMAL
BRUTE - BEAST ANIMAL RUFFIAN
CREATURE - ANIMAL BEAST CREATION BEING THING
D Display documentation
This displays this file one page at a time
use PgUp and PgDn to scroll and RETURN to exit
L Hard copy or Printout
This option when on - means that every time you scroll, search
or cross reference, the words also go to the printer.
when off - output only goes to the screen
Would you like output to a file? - write me and say
-> (printer must be on and online)
This list should get you acquanted with the many features of
THESAUR and make you more confident in using it.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to give the names of the books that I used for reference
when compiling this thesaurus.

REQUIREMENTS
1) IBM PC/XT/AT or close compatible
2) PC-DOS or MS-DOS 2.0 or higher
OPTIONS
Some of these options can be changed from the main menu (printer), others
(color, time, hard disk) can be changed from (C Check THESAUR setup)
1) PRINTER
2) COLOR MONITOR
3) DISPLAY DATE AND TIME
4) HARD DISK
5) DISPLAY COLORS
WORDS OF CAUTION
1) Because many words have more than one meaning, so too, the synonyms may
also have vastly different meanings. It would be wise that if
the definition of a synonym is unknown, that it be looked
up in a dictionary, so as to be sure that the correct word
and meaning is used. I am not responsible for any incorrect usages
of a word in a report, term paper, letter to the President, etc.
2) When changing the data drive for THESAUR be sure that you have
already copied THESAUR.DAT to the correct drive, this assures
that THESAUR can find and use the data on the new drive
designation. If you change the data drive and THESAUR
gives you a blank line at the bottom when you try to scroll,
you did not correctly copy THESAUR.DAT to the intended drive.
3) BE REALISTIC. Do not try to change the data drive to a drive you
do not have and do not try to set THESAUR up for color if your
machine cannot handle color. When you Display document (D)
the file THESAUR.DOC must reside in the default drive.
Finally do not use the ( L Hard copy on/off ) if you do
not have a printer, or if the printer is not on or online.
PLEASE!
4) It is required to keep a backup of THESAUR so that if an accident
occurs, you wish to modify THESAUR for yourself, or when (not If)
you give an unmodified copy to someone else you can use
your backup copy for this purpose.
5) The following files MUST be on the default drive when THESAUR is run
THESAUR.DPL
THESAUR.DAT Unless changed by (C Check set-up)
THESATR.DAT " " " " " " "
THESAUR.DOC " " " " " " "
6) It is not too dificult to count to number of times that you
either use THESAUR or the number of words you look up.
However, I'm more trusting than to resort to violence.
Please do not betray my trust in you, and register!
REQUESTS
1) I, would like to request that you give a copy of THESAUR
to AT LEAST ONE, if not MANY MORE of your friends
>>----------> PLEASE give only unmodified copies of THESAUR to others.
Use your backup (you did make one, right?) to make copies.
2) If you have any ideas, comments, or corrections (especially of
spelling errors) on THESAUR I would appreciate hearing those also.

Also - the most important change of all! I have completed Thesaur
Plus. Thesaur Plus contains all the ease of use and style of Thesaur,
but Thesaur Plus is Memory Resident! Now you can Pop Thesaur Plus
up over any Word Processor, Text editor, or other type of program,
without being at the C:>.
Requirements: DOS 3.0 and up
Hard Drive
Just a little taste of the advanced features of Thesaur Plus
(Besides being memory resident).
Automatically will use EMS if available.
Only uses 10k of RAM when using Disk Swapping, or EMS.
Full featured editor for editing word entries.
No need to configure it! Thesaur Plus recognizes the
environment it is in and so adapts (Color, whether
extended memory is available, where on the path the
data file is)
Also I am working on adding 25% more words!
I am also working on compressing the data file where it
will be smaller.
The memory resident version is ONLY available to registered users,
so if you like what you see in THESAUR I highly recommend that you
register and receive Thesaur Plus.
